If you want to create the illusion of space and maximise light throughout your hallway, glass stair panels may well be the answer. In a recent interview, top interior designers share inside tips on styling glass-panelled staircases, offering advice on everything from décor to materials. Here’s a taste of what they had to say:

Rebecca Dupere from Dupere Interior Design suggests keeping hallway furniture to a minimum and using light colours for the walls, avoiding any small, fussy wallpaper designs that could detract from the appeal of the glass. She also recommends using mirrors and good lighting to help make a small, narrow space seem larger. If the stairs themselves are dark, Rebecca advises painting them or laying a runner—either plain or with some stripes—to add interest.

Steph Briggs from LaDiDa Interiors cites texture as being a design feature in itself and talks about how the simplicity of the glass, combined with other tactile materials such as wood and fabric, can create a stunning effect. She also explains how glass offers a fabulous base to work from, and how the colour scheme and feel of a hallway can be changed quickly and easily without worrying about hours of painting woodwork—particularly important if you like to update your interior on a regular basis.

Emile Ezan from Chameleon Designs talks about how glass can be used to create a divide between seating and dining areas, where the flow of the two spaces is more open-plan. He explains how glass allows light to flow throughout a space, especially in period properties where lack of light can sometimes be an issue.

Finally, Elaine Penhaul from Lemon and Lime Interiors recommends using glass to show off different types of unusual wood or funky carpet, suggesting that even concrete would look fantastic against it. Elaine also stresses the importance of keeping glass sparkling-clean to enhance its appeal and allow the staircase to act as a great-looking statement piece at all times.
